Professor Hong, who previously served as Executive Head of Performing & Screen Arts at Unitec, returned after sixteen years to lead the unified organisation. The 2026 academic year began with remarkable momentum, welcoming 2,852 new domestic and international students across both campuses. More than 1,200 students were formally welcomed onto Te Noho Kotahitanga Marae through eight pōwhiri (traditional Māori welcoming ceremonies). The institution’s commitment to student success was underscored when two engineering students were named finalists for the prestigious Student Engineer Leadership Award at the Engineering New Zealand 2026 Auckland Awards.
