Ozarks Technical Community College: Empowering Students, Strengthening Communities
Since its founding in 1990, Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) has grown from a bold vision into one of southwest Missouri’s most vital educational institutions. Established by voters across the Springfield school district and thirteen surrounding public school districts, OTC opened its doors in September 1991 with just 1,198 credit-seeking students. Originally named Heart of the Ozarks Community Technical College, the institution shortened its name to Ozarks Technical Community College in 1994. Students come from more than 400 high schools, representing 75 Missouri counties and 10 different states. More than 2,800 students are preparing for careers in health sciences—including nursing, radiography, and sonography—while over 3,000 students are gaining hands-on training in technical fields like aviation, automotive, and construction. OTC’s commitment to workforce development has earned national recognition. In 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor awarded OTC a nearly $5.7 million Strengthening Community Colleges grant—making it the only institution in Missouri and one of only 18 nationwide to receive this funding. The grant supports the expansion of health care training programs, with OTC anticipating that nearly 3,500 trained individuals will help meet the region’s critical workforce needs in nursing, radiography, sonography, and emergency medical services. Facility expansions reflect OTC’s growth and ambition. The college recently opened a $5 million Technical Training Center at its Richwood Valley Campus, dedicated to agriculture and electrical distribution systems training. The Roy Blunt Aviation Training Center also debuted, providing hands-on flight and maintenance training. In August 2026, OTC will open the Michael L.
